Before you even get to the airport, you should start thinking about the jet lag you might get at your final destination. Avoid drinking alcohol the day before flying and while you are on the flight. It's best to sip water throughout the flight and keep yourself hydrated with juices instead of coffee. Avoid blood clots by getting up and stretching frequently.
Don't forget to book yourself a special meal. Instead of the usual chicken or beef option, you can enjoy a better quality meal, served to you before the regular meals go out. Try everything from vegetarian, low-fat and low-cholesterol to Hindu, kosher and Asian dishes; your airline will provide a list of options.
Below are six keys to having a more enjoyable and relaxing airplane journey:
Take non-stop flights
The easiest way to eliminate hassle while travelling by air is to book a non-stop flight. Not only do these save time, but they also save the aggravation of getting off one plane and on to another. You won't have to risk short connection times that require running to catch a flight, or long waits that leave you bored in the airport.
Space connections well
It's not always possible to get a non-stop flight. However, if you have to connect somewhere, make sure you have plenty of time in the transit lounge. Get your boarding pass ahead of time and have luggage checked through to your end destination.
Flights are often late or delayed, so you'll be glad if you left yourself enough time to make the connecting flight and maybe even have a bite to eat or buy a magazine on the way.
Discounted airport hotel rooms
Book morning flights
The least booked flights are those in the morning, making it more likely you will have an empty seat next to you on a morning flight. This means more room to move around and relax in when you are in the air. Not only that, but airport parking and the airport itself will be less crowded so you won't have to wait in long lines.
Don't fly when everyone else does
Peak flying times are the worst times to fly. During holidays and other congested times, airports are greater targets for terrorists and thus have heightened security. Lines and waits will be longer and there will be more people around you pushing and heating up the airport - not conducive to a relaxing flying experience!
Book cheap airport parking in advance Even the airport parking lot may be full and you'll end up circling around for hours before finding a space.
Check in online
If you're travelling with just a carry-on bag, you may be able to check-in online, saving you the wait of going through standard check-in procedures. Ask your airline if they have this service available.
Plan to get to the airport early
Most airports have good amenities, so arriving early will mean you have time to browse shops and bookstores and to eat, drink and relax before your flight. If you arrive late at the airport, you will be rushed. Running around sweaty, irritable and agitated may in fact cause you to miss your flight altogether!
Planning ahead will make sure you have enough time to recover from unforeseen circumstances like traffic delays on your way to the airport. If necessary, spend the night before the flight at an airport hotel.
